Salkantay - Machu Picchu (5 days)

First day

Early in the morning we start to the valley of Apurimac river until Mollepata. From there we hike into the valley of Rio Blanco for about five hours where we will spend the first night in a village called Soraypampa.

Second day

The next day we hike through seven serpentines to Abra Huamantay. In about 45 minutes we reach the pass and we will have a beautiful view on the Santa Teresa valley, on lagoons and summits. We hike down to Challhuay where we will spend the night.

Third day

Early on the third day we continue downhill to Santa Teresa, a little village at the shore of Vilcanota river. This village got hit from a big landslide that came down from the mountain Salkantay. The train connection to Quillabamba got destroyed. We stay in this village and spend the night there in a simple accommodation.

Fourth day

Today we walk through the valley of Vilcanota until the hydroelectric power plant and along the old train rail at Machu Picchu. We take the train at 4.00pm to Aguas Calientes where we will spend the last night of our trip.

Fifth day

You can also visit the Hot Springs in Aguas Calientes. Early next morning we take the bus to Machu Picchu, where we will have a guided tour and have afterwards some time to walk alone through the ruins. We then go back to Aguas Calientes and take the train in the afternoon back to Cuzco.
